Current manufacturing strategies are based on the optimisation of cost and production outputs. This has led maufacturers to adopt a decision making process that does not take into account the environmental impacts of production activities.
SMART researchers are focussing on improving the development of future manufacturing strategies in which decisions are not only based on cost and operational requirements, but also on environmental impacts. To meet these challenges, SMART's research focusses on two clear areas, firstly to extend the scope of current information models to include relevant environmental data, and secondly to utilise the latest intelligent sensoring devices to improve planning and control of manufacturing processes.
