Including sustainability in the design process provides manufacturers with the potential to significantly improve the environmental, social and economic performance of a manufacturing business.
To realise holistic improvements, SMART has adopted an integrated approach to sustainable design based on simultaneous consideration of product, process, and plant development. The ultimate objective of this body of research is to go beyond current bolt-on approaches to environmental design, in order to fully embed sustainability considerations throughout the design process from the outset.
